Oral surgery is often feared and misunderstood. Yet with today’s surgical techniques, our doctors specialty training, oral surgery is nothing to be afraid of. Here is what to expect from some common oral surgery procedures.

Wisdom Tooth Removal (3rd Molars)

The last of three sets of molars to erupt, wisdom teeth typically come in at around the age of 18. Many patients, have wisdom teeth that remain below the gumline and bone, so just because you can’t see them doesn’t mean they are not there. We often hear patients say, that if it doesn’t hurt me it’s not a problem.  But, other health issues like Diabetes and High blood pressure also don’t hurt in there early stages; but these conditions require proper evaluation and treatment. Impacted wisdom teeth are no different, this is why proper evaluation by an oral surgeon is the best way to avoid wisdom tooth troubles.

Wisdom teeth are more likely to cause issues than any other teeth in the mouth, but are also the most expendable. If your wisdom teeth are sideways, impacted, or otherwise considered problematic, they will likely require removal to prevent problems in the future.

This is a simple procedure in which we open the gum tissue and remove any bone that is covering the tooth, and then use dental forceps to gently remove the tooth. We may need to section the tooth into pieces to make this easier, and you may have stitches afterward.

Dental Implants

Dental Implants

Small anchors made of biocompatible titanium, dental implants replace tooth roots, providing a stable, sturdy base for removable or fixed replacement teeth. The implants are placed in the jawbone, where they bond to your natural bone.. Then abutment posts are used to attach high-quality replacement teeth such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. In addition, we also offer zirconium ceramic implants, as an alternative to titanium implants.

Impacted Tooth

Impacted Tooth & Tooth Exposure

Impacted teeth do not fully erupt. If the impacted tooth is a wisdom tooth, it should be properly evaluated to determine if it requires removal. Other impacted teeth may be surgically exposed, and braces (orthodontics) may be needed to create enough room for the tooth to emerge.

Oral Pathology

If you have any disease of the mouth or jaw, you may be treated with oral surgery. In addition, if you experience any non-healing sores, unusual lumps or bumps, or other abnormalities in the mouth, a consultation for possible biopsy is the best course of action.

Bone Grafting

Sinus Lift

When a tooth is extracted or lost, the body begins to resorb the surrounding bone. This creates the sunken look that many people who have lost teeth experience. Bone grafting, either from using bone from a nearby area of your mouth or from synthetic materials, may be essential if you have bone loss and want dental implants. In most cases, the best time for bone grafting is at the same visit your tooth is removed. This can eliminate the need of an additional surgery for the bone grafting.

Sinus Lift

Sinus Lift

A sinus lift may be required if you do not have enough bone height in the premolar or molar region of the upper jaw. First, we will open the gum tissue to expose the bone. Next, we will create a small hole in the the bone to expose the sinus. Finally, we will gently lift the sinus membrane to place the bone graft material. The incision will be closed and allowed to heal before further treatments, such as the placement of dental implants.
